Our Team

Anthony H. Handal

Partner

With over 30 years of practice, Anthony Handal counts among the most experienced attorneys in the United States. Tony focuses his practice on patent, trademark and copyright trial and appellate work as well as on internet and commercial matters.

Over the past 30 years, Tony has served as lead counsel in over 200 intellectual property lawsuits with amounts at risk ranging up to $2 billion, representing such clients as ADM, JVC, Conair Corporation, Dayco, Estee Lauder, Clear Channel, Neiman Marcus and Target. These actions have been before the U.S. Supreme Court, many Federal appellate and district courts, and overseas tribunals, and include jury and bench trials. In his career, he has also obtained over 700 patents for his clients. He has experience representing clients from various technologies and industries, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, business methods, medical devices, software, molecular biology, biomedical systems, holography, apparel and retail. Tony has taught patent litigation strategy at the Patent Resources Group. He has also presented in-house training programs at many corporations, including Xerox, Pitney Bowes, J.P. Morgan Chase and General Electric.

A former engineer who conceived the first digital data compression system while a University researcher under Project Apollo, Tony also has worked for many years in licensing, and related corporate matters, as well as in the enforcement and procurement of intellectual property rights in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Tony earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from NYU Tandon School of Engineering and his Juris Doctorate from the Georgetown University Law Center.

Tony is admitted to practice in the states of New York and Connecticut. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Fourth, and Ninth Circuits, the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the Eastern District of Texas.

Mona Das-Roy

Partner

Mona is a registered U.S. Patent Attorney. Her technical areas of specialization include biomedical devices, cosmetics, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, paper technology, sports equipment and material science. A former engineer, her work involved the design of biomedical devices.

Mona earned a B.E.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and received her Juris Doctorate from the Quinnipiac College School of Law.

Mona is licensed to practice in New York, Connecticut, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Izick Vizel

Associate

Izick Vizel is a skilled Patent Attorney licensed to practice in New York, Connecticut, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, enabling him to serve clients nationwide. With a robust educational background including a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Yeshiva University, and both a Juris Doctorate (Law Degree) and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut, Izick combines scientific expertise with a keen understanding of business and law.

As a key member of Handal & Morofsky LLC, Izick has a diverse range of experiences including roles at NKT Photonics laser company and the University of Connecticut Intellectual Property Law Clinic. His proficiency spans patent prosecution, patent drafting, and client representation before the USPTO. Known for his problem-solving skills, project management capabilities, business acumen, attention to detail, and strong analytical abilities, Izick has successfully prosecuted patent applications for medical devices, computer accessories, mechanical devices, personal care products, sports shoes, textiles, packaging technology, and other consumer products.

Izick has earned a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, received the CALI Excellence Award in Patent Law, and contributed to the International Law Journal. His passion for advancing technology and streamlining efficiency is evident in his professional pursuits.

Outside of his legal practice, Izick is interested in modern design functionality and staying abreast of the latest technological advancements. Fluent in English and conversant in Hebrew, he brings a global perspective to his work in intellectual property law.

Firm History

Since our founding in 1976, we have striven to provide a superlative level of service to clients as diverse as Fortune 100 enterprises, venture capital investors, midtier businesses and private innovators. From the start, we have focused solely on assisting clients in intellectual property and competition matters, obtaining patents, protecting trade secrets, and enforcing rights in the courts.

Our early representations included assisting C.L. Farrand, the inventor of the loudspeaker, in procuring and licensing his technologies, representing JVC in its lawsuits with RCA over ownership of the video disc, enforcing patents owned by Alvin and Mortimer Marks, the inventors of polarizing lenses and 3-D movies, and litigating the pioneering holographic optical element patents on behalf of Jobin Yvon.

Since then we have continued our specialization in intellectual property. The last decade has seen H&M’s lawyers enforcing the patents controlling virtual tour technology, defending Best Buy and Amazon against charges of infringing drone technology, and obtaining a groundbreaking patent portfolio for Acessa Health, an $80 million Hologic acquisition.

H&M has obtained many groundbreaking court decisions for its clients, and has appeared in numerous representations before the United States Supreme Court. Most recently, the Firm obtained a favorable decision on all ten counts in what was the first trial held under the relatively recent statute authorizing derivation proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board where two companies claim ownership of the same invention.
