Helping Clients Protect and Commercialize Intellectual Property since 1976
Handal & Morofsky LLC is a specialized law firm recognized for its expertise in a broad range of IP matters involving the procurement and monetization of patent, trademark, copyright and related rights. In addition to the hundreds of successful lawsuits we have handled in the federal trial and appellate courts, H&M is one of only two firms to have taken to trial and won a PTAB proceeding under the federal inventorship derivation statute.
The depth of our experience before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and its trial and appeal boards is reflected in over a thousand patents and many hundreds of trademark registrations we have obtained for our clients, large and small.
Our corporate IP practice is uniquely empowered by leveraging H&M’s litigation and USPTO experience in a team approach that has earned it a stellar reputation as a sophisticated player in IP-related transactional matters, unparalleled among middle-market law firms in the Northeast.

Our Team
Firm History
Since our founding in 1976, we have striven to provide a superlative level of service to clients as diverse as Fortune 100 enterprises, venture capital investors, midtier businesses and private innovators. From the start, we have focused solely on assisting clients in intellectual property and competition matters, obtaining patents, protecting trade secrets, and enforcing rights in the courts.

Our early representations included assisting C.L. Farrand, the inventor of the loudspeaker, in procuring and licensing his technologies, representing JVC in its lawsuits with RCA over ownership of the video disc, enforcing patents owned by Alvin and Mortimer Marks, the inventors of polarizing lenses and 3-D movies, and litigating the pioneering holographic optical element patents on behalf of Jobin Yvon.

Since then we have continued our specialization in intellectual property. The last decade has seen H&M’s lawyers enforcing the patents controlling virtual tour technology, defending Best Buy and Amazon against charges of infringing drone technology, and obtaining a groundbreaking patent portfolio for Acessa Health, an $80 million Hologic acquisition.

H&M has obtained many groundbreaking court decisions for its clients, and has appeared in numerous representations before the United States Supreme Court. Most recently, the Firm obtained a favorable decision on all ten counts in what was the first trial held under the relatively recent statute authorizing derivation proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board where two companies claim ownership of the same invention.
